Apple Lamb Treats

 

2 cups rice, oat or barley flour

1/4 cup sunflower seeds chopped

2 tablespoons applesauce

1 tablespoon peanut butter or cream cheese

1/4 cup lamb all meat baby food

2 eggs beaten

1/4 skim milk

 

Mix the dry ingredients together. Add applesauce, cream cheese or peanut butter, lamb baby food and stir well. In a separate bowl mix the egg and milk together.  Add to the dough. Add a little more milk if the mixture is too dry, you want a firm dough. Knead for a few minutes. Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness cut into desired shapes. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until biscuits are brown and firm.

let cool in the oven for crunchy treats.

These make great dog treats for Easter, also for training.

 

 

   LIVER LOVERS DOG TREAT RECIPE

 

2 cups rice or oat or barley flour

1/2 cup low fat powdered milk

1/2 cup wheat germ

3 table spoons unsalted butter

1 egg

1 cup raw liver blended until almost liquid

 

Combine flour, wheat germ, powdered milk in a large bowl.  Cut in butter until it resembles corn meal. Beat egg with a fork. Add blended liver mix well to a dough like consistency. If dough is too thin, add a little more wheat flour. Knead and roll out 1/4 inch think on baking sheet. Cut into 1/4 inch squares to use as training treats for big dogs. Cut into 1/8 in squares for small dogs. Bake at 325 until browned. Let cool in oven for crunchy treats.

If you roll it really thin it will be crunchier.

 

 be creative, this recipe is forgiving.

 

YAM YUMMIES DOG TREATS

2 Cups oat or barley flour

1/2 Cup low fat powdered milk

1/2 cup wheat germ

6 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 egg

1 cup boiled mashed yams

 

Combine flour, wheat germ, powdered milk in a large bowl. Cut in the butter until it resembles corn meal. Beat egg with a fork. Add mashed yams to the egg. Mix into dry ingredients  and butter with hands until well mixed. Knead and roll out. Cut with cookie cutter. Bake at 325 degrees until lightly browned.

 

*If you can get rice, oat or barley flour it is much better for your dog than whole wheat.

 

 

 

 

STUFF YOUR KONG, your Squirrel Dude or other food interactive toy

 

Kongs are great toys for dogs. If your dog doesn't have one, get him one he will love it. They help to relieve boredom, separation anxiety, fear and other negative feelings. They help to stimulate your dogs thinking and puzzle solving skills. They are just plain fun. I often recommend them to my clients to help with many dog behavior problems. It is important for dogs to succeed at their "work". Make it easy to remove the kong stuffing at first. Please see important note below

 

AS THEY BECOME MORE EXPERIENCED, YOU MAY WANT TO MAKE THEIR JOB MORE CHALLENGING - HERE'S HOW:

1. Pack stuffing tighter.

2. 2. Wedge biscuits inside the cavity using the inside rim of the opening to secure them.

 

A lot of people just give the kong to their dog without filling it. You need to fill it with his dinner or treats in order to get the best results from this toy.

 

Kongs for hot days Use these outside, as they could be a little messy in the house.

 

KONGCICLE

 

PLUG THE SMALL HOLE WITH CHEESE OR PEANUT BUTTER, FILL THE KONG WITH BITS OF CARROTS, PEAS, GREEN BEANS, APPLE, CUKECUMBER, STRAWBERRIES, BLUEBERRIES OR RASPBERRIES. (BE CAREFUL NOT TO USE TOO MUCH FRUIT) NOW FILL WITH WATER OR GATORADE AND FREEZE.  

 FREEZE IT!

Try various combinations of canned food, rice and mashed potatoes mashed yams mixed with food nuggets and freeze. KONGSICLES are a favorite of dogs!  Turn it upside down in a cup. Fill it full of water, or fruit juice (NOT GRAPE JUICE) and freeze. 

 

SOUPER KONGCICLE

 

FILL A KONG AS DESCRIBED IN ANY OF THESE RECIPES AND FREEZE IT. NOW TAKE A SMALL BOWL THAT IS A LITTLE BIGGER THAN THE KONG. PUT 1/2 INCH OF WATER IN THE BOTTOM OF THE BOWL, ADD THE KONG, SPRINKLE SOME VEGIES, FRUIT, OR CHESSE IN THE BOTTOM OF THE BOWL AND FREEZE. WHEN THAT IS FROZEN, ADD THE NEXT LAYER. YOU COULD USE 1/2 INCH OF JUICE OR GATORADE THIS TIME, SPRINKLE IN SOME MORE YUMMY THINGS. KEEP LAYERING AND FREEAING UNTIL THE BOWL IS FULL AND FROZEN. RUN WARM WATER ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BOWL TO REMOVE THE SOUPER KONCICLE FROM THE BOWL. PLACE IT IN THE YARD AND WHATCH YOUR DOG HAVE A REFRESHING TREAT ON A HOT DAY.

 

CHEESE IT! Mix cheese pieces or cheese spread with food nuggets and microwave until cheese melts. Let it cool to a safe temperature. NOTE - Use a cup to contain the Kong when freezing or microwaving.


* Some information has recently surfaced regarding raisin and grape toxicity in dogs. AVOID GRAPES, AND ANYTHING IN THE CABBAGE FAMILY. Also new research shows that garlic contains the same toxin as onions. Avoid onions and garlic.

As you create recipes, be sensitive to your dog's tummy as you experiment. Following are recipes created by veterinarians, dog trainers and dog lovers worldwide.



BANANA RAMA: 1 fresh banana · 2 tbs. wheat germ · 1 tbs. plain yogurt (can use your pet's favorite flavor as well) · Kong Toy that best fits your pet's chewing temperament In a bowl, mash up banana. Then, add wheat germ and yogurt. Mash all ingredients together and use spoon to add to Kong. Freeze for 4 hours. Makes 1 serving for Medium Kong. Double for every Kong Size that is bigger.



CHEESY DENTAL KONG DELIGHT: 3 slices of your pet's favorite cheese · Dental Kong Toy A very simple and creative way to make any pet drool in delight. Just place the 3 slices of cheese directly onto the grooves of your pet's Dental Kong (if model has rope - make sure cheese does not get onto it). Melt in microwave for 20 to 30 seconds. Give to pet after it cools.



FRUIT SALAD: · apple and carrot chunks · 1/4th of a banana · appropriate Kong Toy Place apples and carrots in Kong Toy. Mush the banana in large hole to hold fruit in place. You can include other fruits and veggies: orange slices · peach and/or nectarine chunks · celery sticks peas, green beans, tomato.



VEGGIE KONG OMELET: 1 egg · your choice of shredded cheese · any vegetables that your pet may like · appropriate Kong Toy Scramble egg and fold in vegetables. Put into Kong toy. Sprinkle some cheese over the top and microwave for about 20 seconds. Cool thoroughly before giving to dog.



MAC 'N CHEESE: Leftover macaroni and cheese · small cube of Velveeta · appropriate Kong Toy Melt Velveeta in microwave until gooey. Add mac 'n cheese to Kong Toy. Pour heated Velveeta into Kong. Make sure it has cooled before giving to your pet.

FAMOUS RECIPES
AUNT JEANNIE'S ARCHEOLOGY KONG (for advanced dogs) LAYER ONE (deepest): roasted, unsalted cashews · freeze dried liver bits LAYER TWO: dog kibble, cookies or liver biscotti · Cheerios · sugar-free, salt-free peanut butter · dried banana chips, apples and apricots LAYER THREE: carrot sticks · turkey or leftover ravioli or tortellini · Kong Toy (the larger the better!) Pack as tightly as possible. The last item inserted should be an apricot or piece of ravioli, presenting a smooth "finish" under the main opening. LIGHT VERSION: substitute crumbled rice cakes for cashews, fat free cream cheese for peanut butter. - by Jean Donaldson


KONG ON A ROPE: Dry dog kibble · appropriate Kong Toy · Rope Take the rope, pull it through the Kong Toy and knot it. Hang this upside down from a tree, deck or post. The small hole should be facing the ground. Take the kibble and fill the Kong Toy. Make the toy hang just low enough that it is out of your dog's reach. The dog will spend hours trying to retrieve the kibble from the Kong Toy. At the end of the day, take the remaining kibble and give to your pet as a reward. KONG HUNTING

Hide stuffed Kongs indoors and/or out. The hunt is great fun and rewarding.

Important:
 Provide stuffed Kongs randomly so they won't always be associated with you leaving. 

  If your dog is unstuffing several Kongs per day, you should appropriately reduce the amount of bowl feeding.

CLEAN KONGS THOROUGHLY AFTER USE! Dishwasher is recommended. Your dog's job will last until the Kongs are unstuffed. You can keep your dog "working" all day if you provide enough stuffed Kongs!

**Be careful not to over feed fats and salts always clean the kong out with dish soap and water. Dogs can get food poisoning too..
